Description
City of kings and viceroys, it has always been a sort of cultural and finery oasis in the American Indies . Since its foundation , only a couple of decades were necessary to place it, next to Mexico , as one of the most important metropolis of Spanish America . Baroque and renaissance temples, mansions and palaces, universities, archbishoprics, and an intense cultural activity characterized this city since the beginning of the XVII century, when it hardly held 25 thousand inhabitants.

Anglers and gatherers originally inhabited the ancient Rimac valley, Indian word meaning "talkative", and it was governed by the cacique Tauli Chusco. It was there that on January 1535, the conqueror Francisco Pizarro founded Lima , due to the strategic location of its seaport in the middle of the Peruvian and south American coastline. In less then seven decades it concentrated the power and riches of all the commercial and cultural activities of the Viceroyalty: it became the most important city in America .
In almost five centuries since its Spanish foundation, Lima has been synonym of meztizaje that surprises uninformed people and connoisseurs and that constitutes one of its greatest values. An example of mestizaje is its depurated and innovating culinary art which experts place among the most important internationally, another example is its monumental architecture, that adds to the Cultural Patrimony of Humanity; and its people, witty and skillful, truly experts in adapting to changes. Additionally, Lima offers the tourist excellent museums and art galleries, theater presentations, high-level cultural expositions and modern shopping and entertainment centers, without mentioning important archeological and natural attractions.
