Location:
Peru (official name the Republic of Peru ) is located on the west region of South America . The total area of its territory, including the islands, is 1,285,216 km2. It is the third country in size in South America, after Brazil and Argentina ; its capital is Lima , main finance and economical center of the country.
In Peru we can distinguish three great geographic regions: the Coast, the Mountains and the Forest or Jungle.
The Coast is a long, thin and arid strip that goes along 2,650 km. In it are located the main industrial cities and seaports of the country.
The Andes Mountain Range, in Peruvian territory runs continuously parallel to the coastline, with deep ravines, solids, plateaus, plains and longitudinal and transversal valleys.
The mountainsides of the east mountain ranges descend to a vast tropical region known as The Jungle. Its extension, the greatest of the three, makes up 60% of the Peruvian territory and is covered by thick tropical forests in the west and dense vegetation in the middle.

Weather:
The weather in Peru is extremely varied, oscillating from tropical temperatures in the Jungle to artic cold in the Andean peaks.
Flora and Fauna: Flora of the three great geographic regions is greatly varied, so is the fauna in Peru .
All sorts of guano producing birds, seals and sea wolves live in the coastal region and in the islands. Another kind of fauna is made up of small reptiles, like lizards and insects. In the ocean waters there is a lot of anchovies and many other species of sea animals.
The fauna in the mountains is represented by autochthonous animals, such as llamas, alpacas, vicuñas. Among the birds found in this region stand out the condor, the robin, the hummingbird. The Titicaca Lake , other lagoons and rivers of this region have a great variety of fish.
The tropical forest is a real natural reserve for animal such as the jaguar, the anushi-puma, many kinds of primates, lizards, turtles and a great variety of insects and snakes. Among the birds stand out the parrot, the toucan, the flamingo, and other tropical species. Due to its tropical location and to its varied topography, Peru has an enormous biodiversity. Peru has more than 75% of all the ecosystems on Earth. The national parks and other reserves cover more than 10% of the territory, although only 2% is strictly protected. There are three National Parks that have been designated as Natural Patrimony of Humanity, and three have been declared biosphere reserves under the United Nation's Education, Science and Culture Organization (UNESCO) Program Man and Biosphere.

Almost 74% of the Peruvian population lives in urban areas.
Peru has a population of 28,863,494 inhabitants in 2004, with a density of 23 inhab./km2. Nevertheless, the distribution is not balanced: around 50% of the population lives in the Mountains region, 40% in the Coast, and only 10% in the Jungle.
